Affordances for tourism service design

Abstract: This paper argues that the concept of affordance, which captures the relations between one's abilities and the properties of one's environment, can help in aligning the elements of a tourism service with intended service experiences. We start with a general review of its conceptual basis in ecological psychology and design research, and then elaborate on the concept's potential applications in the context of tourism service design. The application of an affordance-centred framework is illustrated through a cas… Show more

“…The main analytical concept used in this study is platform's affordances. It has recently attracted more attention in tourism studies for defining the physical and social setting of tourism operations (Tomej and Xiang, 2020), or tourists' practices when using technology (Molz and Paris, 2015). “…Similarly, Lei et al ( 2019 ) utilised technology affordance theory to compare hoteliers’ and customers’ perceptions of branded hotel mobile apps. More recently, affordance theory has been applied to tourism research as an analytic approach (Fesenmaier and Xiang 2017 ; Tomej and Xiang 2020 ). These studies support the importance of affordance perspective to provide theoretical and practical insights into the tourism industry.…”

“…Chang (2020 describes the development of this industry from aviation tourism to suborbital space tourism, exploring passenger behavior and the range of business opportunities. Tomej and Zheng (2020) described the possibility of designing new tourist services. They confirm the effectiveness of the concept, which fixes the relationship between human abilities and environmental properties, which can help to reconcile the elements for the creation of a new tourist service.…”
