After trauma: Why assessment of intimacy should be an integral part of medico‐legal reports

Abstract: It is now established that exposure to catastrophic stress may have an enduring impact on the individual. Less well recognized is the impact that the exposure to trauma has on the individual's major relationships. One such relationship, the dyadic couple, is explored in this paper and the impact trauma has on different subtypes of intimacy. It also sets out to recommend innovative ways of conducting a medico-legal assessment of couples affected by trauma.

“…Still, we do not assume that the high rate of reported insufficient information and support concerning sexuality per se reflects the absence of actually given information. The adequacy and efficacy of information or support may depend more on the quality of the doctor-patient relationship than on the content of the information as such, in especially where it concerns the sexual aspects of a genital, life-threatening tumour [18,20,48]. This relationship implies not only the vulnerability of the patient but, as a consequence, also of the doctor, in who's hands the patient feels his fate has been laid down.…”

“…Patient Education and Counseling 52 (2004) [143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150] This may affect in especially the sexual-masculine integrity of the person [17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. As a result sexual functioning can assumed to be under pressure, and research indeed revealed sexual morbidity among patients treated for testicular cancer (see for example [24][25][26]).…”

“…Several attempts have been made to conceptualize intimacy over the years. Mills and Turnbull [27], for example, defined intimacy as “the ability to be sensitive and aware of each other's psychological, emotional, physical, operational, social and spiritual needs” (p. 301). Schaffer and Olson [28] described marital intimacy as comprising of five domains: emotional, social, intellectual, sexual, and recreational.…”

“…Schaffer and Olson [28] described marital intimacy as comprising of five domains: emotional, social, intellectual, sexual, and recreational. Intimacy is therefore viewed as a multidimensional concept consisting of the ability to trust one another, share thoughts and feelings, and engage in a relationship involving friendship and sexuality [27].…”

Mills & Turnbull, 2001.…”
