“…Such analyses are particularly relevant to red macroalgae, since previous studies have documented a variety of sources of intraclonal variation in several Gracilaria species. Van der Meer et al (1984) noted the spontaneous production of a mutant bisexual branch by a male Gracilaria tikvahiae clone that remained bisexual in subsequent cultures, while Lignell and Pedersén (1989) found that wild-type Gracilaria secundata thalli were capable of differentiation into at least eight morphologically distinct strains. Santelices and Varela (1993) detected significant phenotypic variation in growth rate and morphology among Gracilaria chilensis branches of a single thallus and spores from the same cystocarp, and growth-related increases in genetic heterogeneity among branches of individual G. chilensis thalli have also been observed .…”

“…Branches were gently blotted dry and weighted weekly on an analytical balance MettlerToledo AE 200S. Growth rates (GR) were assessed weekly according to Lignell and Pedersén (1989). A two-way analysis of variance was performed using the software STATISTICA 7.0 (StatSoft, Inc.), considering the time and life-history stages as independent variables and the growth rates as dependent variables.…”
