Age and education adjusted normative data and discriminative validity for Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test in the elderly Greek population

Abstract: Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is a widely used neuropsychological test to assess episodic memory. In the present study we sought to establish normative and discriminative validity data for the RAVLT in the elderly population using previously adapted learning lists for the Greek adult population. We administered the test to 258 cognitively healthy elderly participants, aged 60-89 years, and two patient groups (192 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, aMCI, and 65 with Alzheimer's disease, AD).… Show more

“…Further, our aMCI sample had a marginally higher education level compared with HC that could explain the lack of significant group differences in RAVLT performance in our study. This is supported by previous reports that suggest a significant association between education level and RAVLT performance in older populations 26 .…”

“…These results are consistent with those of Nitrini (2008), and other studies also showed positive correlations between education and VEM tasks (Gabriel & Conboy, 2010;Messinis et al, 2016). In the study of Angel et al (2010) four groups were assessed according to age (young and elderly) and education (low and high) in a VEM test.…”

“…RAVLT performance is influenced by subjects’ demographic characteristics, including age, education, and sex [15]. The RAVLT delayed recall score has been reported to have adequate discrimination in older adults with normal cognition vs. MCI (AUC = 0.71) and good discrimination for normal cognition vs. dementia (AUC = 0.93) [16].…”
