“…It is not clear whether the difference represents a genuine decline in age at menarche similar to that reported in the US [35] (from 12.53 years in 1988/1994 to 12.34 years in 1999/2002), Japan [36] (from 12.3 years for women born 1960 to 12.2 years for women born in 1980), Croatia [37] (from 12.92 years in 1997 to 12.31 years in 2010) and Ireland [38] (from 13.52 years in 1986 to 12.53 years in 2006) or just reflects different methodological approaches. Although there is no data that allow for direct comparison from the region, more than two decades ago, in a cancer survey in Saudi Arabia, a difference of 0.4 year in the age at menarche was reported between women born 20 years ago and women born 45 years ago [32]. Recent reports in western countries suggest that the age at menarche is no longer declining and that it has started to level off [39,40].…”

“…The same applies when age at menarche for girls in our study is compared with that of girls from Jeddah in 1995, which was found to be 15.1 years. 11 This declining menarcheal age was reported in KSA before, 32 when a difference of 0.4 years in menarcheal age was observed when age at menarche for 2 generations of women was compared in a cancer survey. This might suggest an ongoing secular trend of a declining menarcheal age among Saudi girls.…”
