Age-Deterring and Skin Care Function of a Polyphenol Rich Sugarcane Concentrate

Abstract: Increasing evidence suggests that environmental stress, such as UV radiation, generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in skin cells, leading to histochemical changes including skin disorders and aging, hyper pigmentation, and increased formation of wrinkles. Besides the defensive system in skin composed of vitamins and intrinsic antioxidant enzymes, topical and skin conditioning products have been used commonly to eradicate or eliminate these skin ailments. Among various ingredients providing nourishing… Show more

“…Nonetheless, the amount of information on this subject is still very few. In addition, a polyphenol rich sugarcane concentrate (Officinol™) has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase and elastase activities 116 . The same effect caused by sugarcane polyphenols is reported by Carvalho et al 24 In this work, it is possible to observe that the inhibitory effect was concentration dependent, as it was higher at higher concentrations.…”

However, the two highest concentrations exert a very similar inhibitory effect, suggesting that, at these concentrations, the highest possible inhibitory effect produced by this sample could have almost been reached.…”

“…The natural antimicrobials market is expected to grow at an annual compound growth rate of 7.3% over the period 2019–2024, because multidrug-resistant food-borne pathogens have prompted the search for natural and cheaper antimicrobials that can replace the synthetic agents, representing a high economic impact [ 57 ].…”

“…A novel preparation named "polyphenol-rich sugarcane extract" (PRSE) has been shown to have a large concentration of both polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds, and has been shown to have some beneficial effects on energy uptake and metabolism in cancer cells, as well as being able to impact the actions of insulin-secreting pancreatic β-cells [24]. It is also able to impart benefits in diabetes, has anti-bacterial effects and improves the cosmetic effects of aging in the skin [25]. PRSE has also been shown to modulate the immune system, with effects on inflammation, cancer and neurological disorders [26,27].…”
