Age-Period-Cohort Analysis of Liver Cancer Mortality in Korea

Abstract: Background: Liver cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the world. In Korea, hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major risk factor for liver cancer but infection rates have been declining since the implementation of the national vaccination program. In this study, we examined the secular trends in liver cancer mortality to distinguish the effects of age, time period, and birth cohort. Materials and Methods: Data for the annual number of liver cancer deaths in Korean adults (30 years and older) were obta… Show more

“…In this study, the total PP for liver cancer in Isfahan province was 18.5 per 100,000 persons that corresponded to a value of 20.9 for males and 16.8 for females. This is consistent with published articles that also confirmed higher values in males (15). Age reported liver cancer was 13% in patients less than 50 years and as high as 84% between 50 to 90 years.…”

“…However, the number of deaths resulting from the various liver diseases has changed significantly in China during the same period. While similar to the trends observed in developed countries,1 15 16 24 CLD mortality rates have declined dramatically in China, and PLC mortality rates have risen continually over the same period. Furthermore, VH mortality rates started to rise in 2004 after more than a decade of decline.…”

“…We examined the secular trends in mortality resulting from various liver diseases in mainland China from 1987 to 2016 using APC analysis, a method widely used for decomposing variations in secular trends of mortality or morbidity of diseases by age, period and cohort 3 15 16…”

“…However, a non-identification problem may still exist as there is a linear relationship between the age, period and cohort, which makes it difficult to estimate the unique set for every age, period and cohort effect [17]. To solve this problem, the intrinsic estimator (IE) method, which is associated with the APC model and was proposed by Yang and Fu [25], was used [17,26]. We used the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of the model.…”
