Ageing evaluation of cable insulations subjected to radiation ageing: Application of principal component analyses to Fourier Transform Infra‐Red and dielectric spectroscopy

Abstract: The evolution of properties of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE)-based insulating materials under radio-chemical ageing conditions is presented and discussed. In total, seven different polymer compounds were tested, characterised by an increasing quantity of additives, for example, antioxidants (AOs) and fillers as flame retardants. Samples were analysed using different testing techniques, that is, Fourier Transform Infra-Red and dielectric spectroscopy. This allowed a broad characterisation of the polymer, brin… Show more

“…The materials under study in the present article were evaluated using different analytical techniques and the obtained results have led to many articles, in addition to those already cited in this paper [28][29][30][31][32]. Some of the obtained results were analysed using PCA: it concerns FTIR spectra evaluation [22] and dielectric spectroscopy measurements [33]. The experimental results and their mathematical evaluation have led to equivalent conclusions.…”

“…For this reason, we choose to compare LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) with a crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE). The investigation conditions are, for relatively high doses, representative of the environment of NPP [ 3 , 4 ] and, for dose rates, correspond to accelerated aging experiments currently available [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
