Agent-based computing from multi-agent systems to agent-based models: a visual survey

Abstract: 1Agent-Based Computing is a diverse research domain concerned with the building of intelligent software based on the concept of "agents". In this paper, we use Scientometric analysis to analyze all sub-domains of agent-based computing. Our data consists of 1,064 journal articles indexed in the ISI web of knowledge published during a twenty year period: 1990-2010. These were retrieved using a topic search with various keywords commonly used in sub-domains of agent-based computing. In our proposed approach, we h… Show more

“…MAS divides a complex problem into sub-problems solved by representative agents [63]; for this reason, this approach is employed to model complex problems with multiple cyber agents. ABM is related to, but clearly distinct from, the MAS concept [92]. A MAS can contain combined ABM, and in cases where the problem of energy saving is a multi-dimensional problem, MAS is an appropriate application [92,93].…”

“…ABM is related to, but clearly distinct from, the MAS concept [92]. A MAS can contain combined ABM, and in cases where the problem of energy saving is a multi-dimensional problem, MAS is an appropriate application [92,93]. MAS may balance between occupants' preferences and energy saving; ABM fails to achieve this aim.…”

“…Accordingly, the body of relevant literature is growing rapidly in the field of energy policy studies. In order to identify core publications related to energy policy, the "topic search" and the "citation expansion" approach were utilized to retrieve the raw data (i.e., the articles and their citations) by following [12,18,[68][69][70][71]. The former technique is used to select articles with specific terms in their titles, keywords, keywords plus, abstract content, or identifiers, while the latter one identifies references of the selected articles to "remedy" and expand the dataset with closely related studies of a topic.…”

“…Computer graphics, data mining and other computer technologies are incorporated as well. CiteSpace and its updated versions have been widely used in various disciplines to observe patterns and transitions of a certain topic or scientific field due to its validity, reliability and flexibility [17,18].…”

“…Although agent-based modelling is usually associated with social science contexts using "intelligent" agents [50], it has application in the biological sciences [51], and has been used to model microbes and biofilm formation [52,53] and the immune system [54]. The model used an object-oriented approach implemented in C++.…”
