Aging effect in the BESIII drift chamber

Abstract: As the main tracking detector of BESIII, the drift chamber provides accurate measurements of the position and the momentum of the charged particles produced in e + ecollisions at BEPCII. After six years of operation, the drift chamber is suffering from aging problems due to huge beam related background. The gains of the cells in the first ten layers show an obvious decrease, reaching a maximum decrease of about 29% for the first layer cells. Two calculation methods for the gain change (Bhabha events and accumu… Show more

“…In order to reduce the dark currents of the sense wires and to use the detector in a safe configuration the voltage of the first four layers has been decreased with respect to the normal values, which result in the decrease of the performance of the detector. The gain with respect to 2009 status has been reduced up to 60% and this affects the event reconstruction worsening the detection efficiency up to 50% [34]. The gain of the cells closer to the IP shows a sizable decrease, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The development of a new Cylindrical GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) Inner Tracker, the CGEM-IT, stems from the need for the replacement of the inner drift chamber of the BESIII (Beijing Spectrometer III) experiment, which has been suffering a loss in performance due to aging phenomena [1] [2]. BESIII is a high energy physics experiment located at the southern interaction point of the BEPCII (Beijing Electron Positron Collider II) storage ring, at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing.…”

“…The MDC encountered the Malter effect [4] due to cathode aging during ψ(3686) data taking in 2012. This effect was suppressed by mixing about 0.2% water vapor into the MDC operating gas [5] and can be well modeled by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The other sub-detectors worked well during 2009 and 2012.…”
