Agricultural aircraft wing slat tolerance for bird strike

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this study is to assess and describe possible consequences of a bird strike on a Polish-designed PZL-106 Kruk agricultural aircraft. Due to its susceptibility to such events, a wing slat has been chosen for analysis. Design/methodology/approach Smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation has been used for generation of the bird finite element model. The simulations were performed by the LS-Dyna explicit finite element analysis software. Several test cases have been analysed with differ… Show more

“…It's worth noting that operating UAVs in areas inhabited by birds of prey carries a risk of UAV attack, as they might be perceived as intruders or threats (Chabot et al, 2015). The study (Deskiewicz et al 2017) details the consequences of various bird-collision scenarios with the aircraft wing of a PZL-106 Kruk.…”

“…Limitations to the use of UAVs equipped with cameras or other types of detectors when observing wildlife are the difficulty in detecting small animals, the difficulty in monitoring fast-moving animals, the flight time limited by battery capacity, the inability to use in difficult weather conditions and dense vegetation (Francis et al , 2020; Mangewa et al , 2019; Rahman et al , 2020). In addition, UAVs are also vulnerable to predator attacks or collisions with birds (Deskiewicz and Perz, 2017). Parameters related to flight stabilisation (positioning systems) during image capture, affecting the quality of the information collected, also have a significant impact on the conduct of drone surveys (Zmarz et al , 2018).…”

“…The optimization complexity depends on particular project, for example to adaptive wings (Maute and Reich, 2004) or to find a solution lug design for bird strike conditions (Deskiewicz and Perz, 2017). According to methods of optimization, parts can be analyzed under numerous conditions.…”
