Agricultural Strategies to Reduce Cadmium Accumulation in Crops for Food Safety

Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) contamination in edible agricultural products, especially in crops, has raised worldwide concerns regarding food safety consumption. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the applicable methods and perspectives for reducing Cd contamination of agricultural products. Agricultural approaches of soil amendments, irrigation management, microbial agent, and cropping patterns were systematically concluded to illustrate the developments and achievements in crop contamination management. The use… Show more

“…Cadmium then bioaccumulates in the kidneys and liver. Soils can be contaminated with cadmium through application of rock phosphate fertilizers, sewage sludge and industrial wastes (Ismael et al, 2018;Australian Government, 2022;Mubeen et al, 2023). Australian soils have low levels of natural cadmium and fertilizer application is the most significant contributing source of the cadmium to the Australian sheep meat value chain (Warne et al, 2007;MacLachlan et al, 2016).…”

“…One approach is to modify the soil through phytoremediation and the application of amendments such as lime, phosphate, and organic compounds to reduce Cd availability for plant uptake ( Bolan and Duraisamy, 2003 ; Guo et al., 2018 ; Rizwan et al., 2018 ). Good agricultural practices including the irrigation management, the strict application of fertilizer, and the limitation of Cd content in fertilizer can also contribute to the reduction of Cd contamination during crop production ( Sterckeman et al., 2018 ; Ulrich, 2019 ; Mubeen et al., 2023 ).…”

“…Cadmium (Cd) pollution in agricultural soils is a significant and persistent global concern, exerting detrimental effects on farmland and ecosystems, while also posing serious threats to crop yield and food safety (Bashir et al., 2020; Mubeen et al., 2023). The impact of Cd on farmland is concerning, as it adversely affects crop growth and productivity.…”
