AH 12 years later: a comprehensive survey of adaptive hypermedia methods and techniques

Abstract: A hypermedia application offers its users much freedom to navigate through a large hyperspace. Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) offers personalized content, presentation and navigation support. Many Adaptive Hypermedia Systems (AHS) are tightly integrated with one specific application and/or use a limited number of techniques and methods. This makes it difficult to capture all of them in one generic model. In this paper we examine adaptation questions stated in the very beginning of the adaptive hypermedia era and ela… Show more

“…Web-based education has proven to be a very productive application area for adaptive hypermedia (Brusilovsky 1996(Brusilovsky , 2001Knutov et al 2009). Many adaptive Web-based educational systems explore a wide range of adaptive hypermedia techniques (such as page content or media adaptation, link annotation, hiding, or generation) and attempt to use various characteristics of a student (goals, knowledge, learning style, etc.)…”

“…The paper, however, neither provides a historicallycentered overview of the field nor offers a detailed classification of AH technologies, since these reviews can be found elsewhere (Brusilovsky, 2001;Brusilovsky, 2004;Brusilovsky, 2007;Bunt, Carenini & Conati, 2007;Knutov, De Bra & Pechenizkiy, 2009). Instead, the paper attempts to give a developer-oriented insight into the internal structure of AEH systems.…”

“…There is an increasing need and demand to adaptively change the contents of webbased learning environments to use them with a variety of devices (Huang, Wang, and Hsieh, 2012). Making adaptive systems independent upon the environment is referred to as a higher order of adaptation (Knutov, De Bra, and Pechenizkiy, 2009). Huang, Wang, and Hsieh (2012) presented an adaptive mobile learning system that provides adaptation capabilities to suit both specific learners and devices.…”
