Air Pollution and Potential Health Risk in Ostrava Region - a Review

Abstract: were used. To evaluate the exposures both short-term (hourly and daily) data and long term (yearly) data during 45 years were analysed. For health risk assessment the relationship between exposure and biological effects of pollutants published by the WHO and the US EPA were employed. Results: During the studied period annual average concentrations of PM 10 ranged from 25 to 96 µg/m 3 ; PM 2.5 from 24 to 45 µg/m 3 ; SO 2 from 3.4 to 101.5 µg/m 3 ; NO 2 from 17.76 to 51.17 µg/m 3 ; benzene from 0.24 to 9.2 µg/m 3… Show more

“…The main migration flows are directed to the south-eastern or north-western part of the region [109], which have better environmental conditions. The paradox is that air quality in some (close) suburban locations is not significantly different from Ostrava [105]. We should also not neglect the impact of poor-quality housing stock or virtually non-existent spatial regulation.…”

“…(a) Environmental factors: Environmental pollution, especially air pollution, is one of the main reasons for outmigration from Ostrava. Despite the fact that the amount of total emissions dropped from 35,000 tons (1990) to 929 tons (2012) [105], Ostrava is one of the most polluted cities in Europe [106]. Poor environmental quality still acts as a key push factor, especially for the educated population (see below).…”

“…Serious health outcomes, including genotoxicity, due to the permanent high ambient PM and BaP exposures were reported for the Ostrava region by several studies conducted recently [158][159][160][161][162][163]. Furthermore, a moderately strong association between air pollutant concentrations and respiratory difficulties among asthmatic children and adolescents was reported [164].…”

“…The underlying biological pathways that produce these compounds in sweat, sebum, and epidermis are quite varied and the compounds of interest have a wide range of polarity, size, and structure as a result. These diverging compounds are of interest to clinical research fields such as forensics and toxicology [11][12][13], not to mention the obvious applications in medicinal diagnosis [14][15][16], doping tests [17,18], and environmental/occupational exposomics [19][20][21].…”
