Air pollution effects on structure, proteins and flavonoids in pollen grains of Thuja orientalis L. (Cupressaceae)

Abstract: Increase in the levels of air pollution due to the increase in industrial and agricultural technology has prompted investigation of mechanisms that contribute to air pollution tolerance in plants. Pollen grains of Thuja orientalis were collected from controlled (less polluted) and polluted areas (mainly SO 2 , NO 2 , CO, HC and APM). Thuja pollen is considered inaperturate and granulate. The exine is shed during rehydration, leaving the male gametophyte naked. The pollen grains collected from polluted areas ar… Show more

“…Changes in individual phenolic metabolites have also been reported in A. artemisiifolia pollen upon CO 2 and/or drought stress [43], whereas no changes were observed upon ozone fumigation [14]. The pollen of several other plants species that were sampled from polluted and less-polluted areas showed an increased amount of individual flavonoids [44] [45]. These data indicate that individual stress will differentially affect the flavonoid composition.…”

“…The disappearance of some proteins and the de novo synthesis of others were resulted from SDS-PAGE analysis, which indicates the impact of air pollution on plants. Similar experiments also conducted by several workers to evaluate the major changes of protein in different plant species exposed to air pollution [11,35,36].…”
