Biodiversity in Indonesia is the second highest in the world, the medicinal plants are included in it that must be preserved because of their great benefits for a human being life. Ethnomedicine exploration is a bright way that can be done to record and preserve the biodiversity of medicinal plants in Indonesia. The society in Cihanjuang Village still use medicinal plants to treat digestive disorders, but the lack of documentation will eliminate this knowledge in the future. This ethnomedicine study aims to determine plants which used as diarrhea and ulcer drugs in Cihanjuang Village, consisting of the name, the plant part used, the research method used, and identification of the secondary metabolites. The research methodology used are interview methods with questionnaires, observation, documentation, calculation of Use Value (UV) analysis and phytochemical screening. The informant selection technique used purposive and snowball sampling. The result of this study was the discovery of 24 species of medicinal plants to treat digestive disorders in Cihanjuang Village, most of which belonged to the family of Zingiberaceae and the leaves were the most widely used. The highest of UV’s value for diarrhea is Salak plants (Salacca zalacca) and for ulcers is Hanjuang (Dracaena sanderiana). Some of the species tested for phytochemical screening showed various secondary metabolites that were efficacious in treating digestive disorders. Areuy tulungpung is one of the species that can be studied further due to lack of information as a medicinal plant for digestive disorders.

Recently, exploration of natural antibiotic alternatives by utilizing medicinal plants is often carried out. Nutmeg plant (Myristica fragrans Houtt) is a tropical plant endemic to the Maluku Island and often used as medicine by local people. This study was aimed to isolate endophytic bacteria from the nutmeg plant and detect its potential as an antibacterial against pathogenic bacteria. The study is a descriptive observational study with a true experimental approach. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from several organs of the nutmeg plant such as leaves, leaf bones, stems, fruit flesh, and seeds and then tested for their inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acne, and Escherichia coli. The results showed that: (1) the highest total population of endophytic bacteria was found in the seeds of nutmeg (7.5x104 CFU/ml), (2) ten isolates of endophytic bacteria were obtained with varying morphological characteristics, and (3) the detection of antibacterial activity showed that of the 10 isolates obtained, 4 isolates were able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, namely isolate BEAD2, BEATD1, BEABJ 2, and BEABJ 1 with the diameter of the inhibition zones of each isolate being 3.4 mm, 3.2 mm, 1.6 mm and 1.5 mm respectively. The conclusion of this study is that 4 isolates of endophytic bacteria were detected as potential antibacterial against Escherichia coli.

Bacteria can symbiotic mutualism and synergize with plants in the tissue and do not cause harm to plants. On the other hand, bacteria resistance provides an opportunity to search for antibacterials from natural material without threatening plant biodiversity. The purpose of this study was to characterize and test the antibacterial activity of endophytic bacteria from the fruit of the Arecaceae family against antibiotic-resistant bacteria Escherichia coli. The method used was direct culture on the growth of media in the laboratory by first sterilizing the surface of the flesh of the samples, such as Aren (Arenga pinnata), Coconut (Cocos nucifera), and Sago (Metroxylon sagu). The pure isolates obtained were characterized according to Bergeys Manual for Identification by performing Gram stain, catalase, and coagulase test. The results obtained were five isolates with codes A1, A2, K, S1, and S2 with variation in morphology colonies. Gram staining, catalase, and coagulase verification of the five isolates were groups of Grampositive cocci, catalase-positive, and coagulase-negative bacteria. Based on tests carried out on the characters of the endophytic bacteria, it was obtained a close relationship with the genus Staphylococcus. The results of the inhibitory activity test showed that Staphylococcus sp. K with the highest criteria of 43.26 mm and Staphylococcus sp. A1 with the lowest inhibition criteria with a value of 24.73 mm. Both are categorized as very strong inhibition criteria.
