Alcohol use disorder increases the risk of non-fatal and fatal cardiovascular disease events: an 11-year observation of a Polish population-based cohort. The HAPIEE Study

Abstract: Short title: Alcohol use disorder increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. What's new? Although public perception seems to be dominated by the cardio-protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption, a recent Mendelian randomization study suggested no beneficial effects of moderate alcohol consumption. Moreover, the accuracy of measuring self-reported alcohol intake, especially in heavy drinkers, is limited. Our findings from a large population-based cohort study suggest a dose-related association betwee… Show more

“…This may exert a protective effect on LV function: mean (SD) EF was found to increase from 34 (8)% to 39 (8)% (P < 0.001) during six months of observation in HF patients with spironolactone added to the therapy [21]. The literature concerning the layer-specific strain associated with chronic alcohol exposure is rather sparse, and it is difficult to obtain accurate information about alcoholism severity, often due to under-rated self-reported alcohol consumption [22].…”

“…В настоящем исследовании из всех поведенческих ФР в анализ были включены курение и избыточное потребление алкоголя. Ранее M. Kozela и соавторы (2020) показали, что риск развития фатальных ССЗ на фоне систематического потребления алкоголя в популяции 45-69 лет увеличивается в два раза [23]. Другим важнейшим фактором возникновения и прогрессирования хронических неинфекционных заболеваний является курение независимо от возраста [24,25].…”
