Algal polysaccharide’s potential to combat respiratory infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Serratia marcescens biofilms

Abstract: The growth of respiratory diseases, as witnessed through the SARS and COVID-19 outbreaks, and antimicrobial-resistance together pose a serious threat to humanity. One reason for antimicrobial resistance is formation of bacterial biofilms. In this study the sulphated polysaccharides from green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Cr-SPs) is tested for its antibacterial and antibiofilm potential against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Serratia marcescens. Agar cup assay clearly indicated the antibacterial potential of Cr-… Show more

“…The supernatant was gently discarded and the pellet was air dried. The weights of the pellets of both untreated and Ts-AgNPs-treated samples were measured and the results were represented as a graph of the total weight of EPS against the concentration of Ts-AgNPs [ 32 ].…”

“…The sulphated polysaccharides produced by green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Cr-SPs) also showed antibacterial and antibiofilm potential against K. pneumoniae (MTCC no. 432) (Vishwakarma et al, 2022). Cr-SPs treatment eradicated more than 50% of preformed biofilm at 0.5 mg/mL and removed 100% biofilm at 4 mg/mL and 8 mg/mL by reducing EPS production and eDNA content of the bacteria.…”

“…In this experiment, eDNA was isolated from control and treated cells by a modified protocol as mentioned in Vishwakarma and Vavilala 2020. Purified e-DNA was quantified spectrophotometrically by using the absorbance ratio of A260/ A280 [68,69].…”
