Algorithm for high-resolution single-shot THz measurement using in-line spectral interferometry with chirped pulses

Abstract: Z. P. Jiang and X. C. Zhang demonstrated a single-shot THz diagnostic based on spectral encoding of a chirped optical probe pulse [Appl. Phys. Lett. 72, 1945 (1998)]. This technique is thought to have an inherent uncertainty principle-imposed temporal resolution limitations. In this letter, we describe a method to recover the THz field without distortions, surpassing previous resolution limitations. Our approach is based on interpreting the spectral encoding experiment as in-line spectral interferometry, analo… Show more

“…The single-shot electro-optic measurement of THz pulses is setup by carefully encoding the temporal information in the spatial direction38394546. The THz pulses generated by this technique and described before are then refocused on an electro-optic crystal by using another off-axis parabolic mirror, which has a hole at the center.…”

“…A fourth technique (spectral encoding geometry [9][10][11]) is based on EO modulation by the THz pulse of a chirped laser pulse. Analysis of the spectrum of the modulated laser pulse yields information of the THz pulse.…”

“…For example, with L = 3 ps and FL = 50 fs the time resolution is limited to Ϸ400 fs. More recently it was shown [11] that the temporal resolution of this technique can be extended to FL by applying an algorithm to the spectral interference structure. However, the complex algorithm often produces unwanted numerical artifacts on the retrieved THz profile [8].…”

“…Such methodology was proposed [8] and experimentally demonstrated [7] recently. In such cases, an imprecise recovery will result, and the resolution limitation in the spectral encoding technique is a manifestation of interpreting frequency axis as time.…”
