Alien macroinvertebrates in Flanders (Belgium)

Abstract: Here we report the occurrence of the two non-native brown macroalgal species Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh and Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar in San Diego County and describe expansions in their ranges and new invasions on the California and Baja California coasts. Both species have exhibited characteristics of successful invaders: establishing in new areas, spreading locally, and persisting through multiple generations in areas that have been invaded. These species now occur primarily in harbors… Show more

“…This threat is exacerbated by increasing trade, unintentional species transport, and the construction of canals connecting biogeographic regions [29]. Alien species, with the ability to invade especially ecosystems where habitat degradation places native populations under stress, can exert large-scale effects that further disrupt these systems [30,31]. This disruption may result from superior competitive capabilities compared to native species or the introduction of predation on species not previously exposed to such threats [32,33].…”

“…Expert data are not included in the reported datasets. An example of such a continued study on VMM sample material is Boets et al (2016) on alien macroinvertebrates in Flanders, with identification up to species level. These data are also available on GBIF: http://www.gbif.org/dataset/3c428404-893c-44da-bb4a-6c19d8fb676a .…”

“…of other non-native aquatic invertebrates in Belgium (Boets et al, 2016) and is considered the most likely introduction pathway of B. chinensis in The Netherlands (Soes et al, 2011(Soes et al, , 2016. The current widespread distribution in North America likely results from several independent unintentional introductions.…”
