Alien Terrestrial Invertebrates in South Africa

Abstract: At the time of writing, 466 alien terrestrial invertebrate species have been reported as being established in South Africa. The most diverse groups within this fauna are the insects (330 species; 70.8%), followed by the arachnids (41; 8.8%), annelids (38; 8.2%) and molluscs (33; 7.1%), together accounting for 95.3% of the total. Within the insects, the Hemiptera are the most species-rich group, followed by the Coleoptera. Most of the invasive arachnid species are mites (24 species), many of which are important… Show more

“…tardigradum and M . berladnicorum were found together in one of the samples (ZA.040), and all four African populations of these two species were collected on the roadsides in the Western Cape Province, where the number of invasive species is among the highest in the RSA (e.g., Janion‐Scheepers & Griffiths, 2020). Interestingly, M .…”

“…To better understand people’s awareness of IAS, we selected three invasive plant species, two invasive animal species, and one indigenous species as a control, and asked people if they could identify each species from a series of photographs. All selected plant and animal species have been recorded as present within the studied area [ 21 , 49 , 50 ]. Plants that were chosen represented different growth forms (tree, grass, and herb/shrub), and examples of vertebrate and invertebrate animals were selected.…”

“…Invasion biology has therefore emerged as a discipline of global importance over the last few decades with many studies investigating this problem at temporal (Müllerová et al, 2017) and spatial (Vaz et al, 2018) scales, and in a range of habitat conditions (e.g. pristine [Nxele, 2012;Janion-Scheepers and Griffiths, 2020] to highly transformed [Potgieter et al, 2020] and types (e.g. forest [Dyderski et al, 2019], grassland [Czarniecka-Wiera et al, 2020]).…”
