Aligning individual and organizational R&D goals for self-sustainability: investigating preferences of researchers in selected CSIR laboratories, India

Abstract: PurposeThis paper intends to explore the measure for aligning the goals of researchers toward achieving organizational R&D targets. The paper also explores the significance and ordering of R&D outputs and the factors that influence generation of R&D outputs, from the perspective of researchers working in the Indian public sector organizations.Design/methodology/approachData were collected in five Indian R&D laboratories, and weighted average method Spearman correlation coefficient and rank regr… Show more

“…Muneeb et al (2020 in investigating the influence of dynamic capabilities (DC) and perceived supervisory support showed a positive influence on the productivity levels of doctoral students on the research productivity of doctoral students in Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Kumari et al (2022) explore that various groups of researchers prefer to target different R&D outputs by analyzing data collected in five Indian R&D laboratories with weighted average method Spearman correlation coefficient and rank regression method. Bai and Hudson (2010), in investigating 182 Chinese TEFL, expose that more than 70% of academics had produced no research in 10 research output fields out of the 12 research output fields during the period 2004-2008.…”

“…In-house, many research institutions have put in place, computerised systems to keep track of the number of publications by their employees. Examples of these are Clarivate (Velmurugan, 2018) and MIV Website in use in India (Kumari et al , 2020, 2021).…”

“…One particular reason for this is the perceived element of “control” (Seema et al. , 2016) by university management that diminishes the power of autonomous motivation by individual researchers (Kumari et al , 2020). In the context of this paper, autonomous motivation, refers to “ when people act out of their own volition and self-endorsement” (Sutton and Brown, 2016; Ezzine-de-Blas et al , 2019).…”

“…The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the largest chain of public-funded R&D institutions in India, has provided necessary R&D solutions to meet the country's need during the pandemic in the form of rapid and economic diagnostics, new drugs/repurposing of drugs, hospital assistive devices and personal protective equipments (PPEs) (Rayasam and Mande, 2020). In response to the challenges faced by society and industry, the Indian R&D institutions are expected to facilitate -(1) the adoption and adaptation of foreign technologies to the Indian environment (2) build competence to develop a pool of skilled manpower, and (3) develop technology incubation and entrepreneurship programs (Sharma et al, 2020;Kumari et al, 2022). Indian public funded R&D organizations like Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) are expected to justify the research funds provided to them from the tax-payer's allowance (Linna et al, 2010;Phusavat, 2013;Ahyaruddin and Akbar, 2016).…”
