Alkaline Factor in Cements with Glass Powder

Abstract: Abstract. 1 The effect of alkaline component in glass powder on the total alkaline content of cement-glass mixtures, which is limited by standards, has been investigated by means of pH-metry, titration and different extragents. Using experimental and calculated results concerning alkaline activity of glass powder it is possible to develop chemical structure of the cement composites which would meet the standards in regard to total alkaline content.

“…Even if the carbonation front were different from those resulting from reinforced samples, in this study, it does not influence the corrosion rate because is only a few millimeters on the concrete surface. Therefore, the carbonation front is almost negligible after two years of exposure, possibly due to an increase in the pH value caused by the particle size average of 23 μm used in this research, and supported by some authors [12, 13].…”

“…Additionally, these mixtures have shown greater elastic modulus, less drying shrinkage, less water absorptivity, and higher resistance against chloride ion penetration [11]. On the other hand, as a partial replacement of cement, it has been reported that particle size of glass powder between 63 μm and 20 μm increases the pH [12]. However, particles of 0.10 μm decrease it [13].…”

“…Among three main types of recycling glass the green glass is the most active. It additionally contains Cr 2 O 3 which catalyzes the conversion of calcium hydro silicate CSH(I) into 1,4-tobermorite as one of the primary crystalline phases of post induction period of Portland Cement hydration [21][22][23].…”

“…The use of glass as an aggregate for mortar or concrete reduces the strength of the obtained products as a result of the reduction in the adhesion between the slurry and the glass aggregate. Moreover, the use of glass as a non-clinker component of cement is also limited due to the high content of alkali in the waste glass, which in turn causes an alkali-silica reaction (ASR) [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. The potential use of glass cullet as a non-clinker component of cement is not clear.…”
