Allergen levels in inner city homes: baseline concentrations and evaluation of intervention effectiveness

Abstract: Allergens in house dust are risk factors for asthma causation and exacerbation, and asthma interventions often focus on exposure reduction using methods that may not be sustainable over time in low-income communities. A randomized controlled trial with up to six home visits was used to evaluate the effectiveness of two interventions focused on reducing dust loading and allergen concentrations in 47 low-income inner-city households in Minneapolis, MN. The interventions, which included education and relatively i… Show more

“…While the effectiveness of the two intervention strategies is reported in a separate article, (36) this article focuses on longitudinal variability in allergen levels. After completion of the first three visits, households were assigned to three different intervention groups-Arm 1, Arm 2, and Arm 3-based on allergen concentrations through Visit 3.…”

“…No other statistics or raw data were provided. Adgate et al (2008) collected 232 samples from 59 residences in the Minneapolis, MN, area using a micro-vacuum sampler. The study area had an asthma rate three times the national average, and households were predominantly of Somali or Hispanic ethnicity, with a large number of low-income homes.…”

“…Recent meta-analyses have shown multifaceted allergen remediation programs to be protective [181,182] against the development of asthma with a 20-50% reduction in odds [172,173], though other studies have been disappointing [77,183]. The most protective effect was seen in children with greater than 5 years of follow-up [182], indicating a true decrease in risk to those prone to develop atopic asthma.…”

“…Allergen remediation strategies [172] directed at cat, dog [173], mold, mouse [174] and cockroach [175,176] can substantially decrease exposure levels in homes. Interventions to reduce HDM alone [177][178][179] have been effective and seem to improve early outcomes.…”
