Alleviation of soil acidity in Ultisol and Oxisol for corn growth

Abstract: Malaysian Ultisols and Oxisols are characterized by low pH, high soil solution AI concentration and Ca and/or Mg deficiencies, which are limiting to corn growth. An experiment was conducted to determine the changes in solid and soil solution phase properties of a representative Ultisol and Oxisol following applications of ground magnesium limestone (GML), gypsum and their combinations, and their effects on corn growth. A plot of p a l against lime potential (pH-1/2 pCa) showed that the points were mostly posit… Show more

“…Soil under these conditions is considered to be suitable for maize production (Shamshuddin et al 1991). The result of the current study is consistent with that conducted earlier by Ismail and Shamshuddin (1993). Dolomitic limestone applied at 2 t ha (1 can reduce H ' stress and Al 3' toxicity in the long run and is less costly than biochar.…”

“…Due to the low pH of Ultisols, good crops of maize could only be produced after adequate application of dolomitic limestone (Shamshuddin et al 1991;Shamshuddin and Fauziah 2010). Al 3' and AlSO 4 ' are the dominant Al species in the untreated Ultisols of Malaysia (Ismail et al 1993). The former is toxic to maize, but the latter is not.…”

“…Despite the low solubility, calcium sulfate provides the soil solution with a calcium source (Ismail et al, 1993). A linear increase of exchangeable calcium was observed, particularly in the mediumtextured soil (Figure 3).…”

“…Submerging the soil is another way of decreasing the acidity. GML application is known to increase soil pH that precipitate Al as Al-hydroxides (Shamshuddin et al, , 1998Ismail et al, 1993;Shamshuddin and Ismail, 1995).…”
