Allozyme divergence between different gene arrangements in Drosophila subobscura

Abstract: Allozyme and chromosomal polymorphism were analysed simultaneously in three population samples of Drosophila subobscura from Scotland, Germany and Italy. The study revealed significant genie divergence between the various chromosomal gene arrangements for the loci Acph, Lap and Pep, which are located inside inversions. No difference was found with the loci Me and Odh, which are both on the same chromosome but proximal to the structurally polymorphic region. Samples of a given gene arrangement taken from the di… Show more

“…DISCUSSION The frequency of the 0 5 inversion has changed in Europe. This inversion had been previously reported in some scattered localities, reaching the highest frequencies, I 0.8%, in Scandinavia (Stumm-Zollinger, 1953;Goldschmidt, 1956;Krimbas, I964a, I964b, 1967;Sperlich, 1964;Sperlich and Feuerbach, 1966;Malogolovkin-Cohen and Sperlich, 1981;Burla et a!., 1986;Pinsker and Bohm, 1989;Gosteli, 1990). We found this inversion in very low frequencies, and we did not detect it in Holland where it had been previously described (Krimbas, 1964b).…”

“…Another infrequent inversion complex, 0 3 + 4 + 2 3 , was only detected in Lilla Edet and Gesten. Excluding Scotland, where it can reach frequencies higher than 20 %, the arrangement was always detected in low frequencies in the rest of the distribution area (CHARLES-WORTH et al 1979;PINSKER and SPERLICH 1981 ;DE FRUTOS and PREVOSTI 1984;PINSKER and BOHM 1989). This is the first time that this arrangement has been detected in Scandinavia, although the following arrangements have also been reported in the Western Mediterranean area: O3+4+23+6, 0 3 + 4 + 2 3 + 1 and 0 3 + 4 + 2 3 + 2(KUNZE-MWHL and SPERLICH 1955;SPERLICH 1961 ;PREVOSTI 1964;JUNGEN 1968; MALOGOLOWKIN-COHEN and SPER-LICH 1981;PINSKER and SPERLICH 1981;FONTDEVILA et al 1983;PREVOSTI et al 1984;BREHM and KRIMBAS 1987).…”
