“…Some proteins in invertebrates have been verified to be affected by EDCs. Vitellin levels have been used as a biomarker of various EDCs in mussel (Gagné et al 2001), clam (Gagné et al 2002) and shrimp (Oberdorster et al 2000). Aromatase activity was reported to be inhibited by tributyltin (Tsai et al 2001), while HSP60 and HSP70 were stimulated by various EDCs (Planelló et al 2008;Sole et al 2000).…”

“…Indeed, Gagné et al (2002) demonstrated that both male and female freshwater mussels, Elliptio complanata, deployed 1.5 and 5 km downstream from a sewage treatment plant in the St. Lawrence River, Canada, exhibited increases in alkali-liable phosphates (ALP) (a surrogate vitellogenin estimate) compared to reference locations. Male blue mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, deployed in Venice canals (receiving raw sewage) have also been shown to exhibit increased ALP levels in hemolymph compared to reference locations (Pampanin et al 2005).…”

“…In estradiol-treated trout, hepatic MT remains at basal levels until the Vg mRNA levels begin to decline and Zn is released from high-molecular-weight proteins (Olsson and Kling, 1995), because vitellogenin is a zinc-containing protein in Xenopus leavis (Montorzi et al 1995) and in Mya arenaria clams (Gagné et al 2002). In the present study, zinc levels in the gonad appeared to be negatively related to vitellogenin-like proteins which are egg yolk proteins whose synthesis are under the influence of estrogens, in part at least (Gagné et al 2001).…”
