Alteration of the Reproductive Indicators by the Presence of Leptospira spp. in Sows of Swine Farms

Abstract: Background:Leptospirosis is a worldwide disease that impacts health, welfare and animal production. Manifestations in swine range from subclinical to severe cases of reproductive failure, generating abortions, embryonic resorption, litters with few piglets, and piglets born weak or dead, which causes great economic losses. Tropical conditions in Colombia favor transmission and maintenance of Leptospira, highlighting the importance of implementing direct diagnostic techniques such as isolation through culture t… Show more

“…Ownership of a small number of peridomestic livestock is frequent in poor rural areas, and pigs are often part of this community. In these situations, pigs are often raised under poor sanitary conditions without veterinary guidance [ 3 , 4 ]. Importantly, the social and geoclimatic characteristics of these areas are conducive to the transmission and maintenance of pathogenic Leptospira species.…”

“…The spectrum of clinical manifestations in pigs can vary from subclinical to severe disease. The major losses of the swine production associated with leptospirosis are abortion, stillbirth, weak piglets, perinatal mortality and infertility (Valença et al, 2013;Ospina-Pinto et al, 2019). Typical symptoms of human leptospirosis include fever, myalgia, and headache.…”
