Alterations of Historic Rural Landscape Based on the Multifunctional Approach: The Case of Coastal Fishing Villages in the Yangtze River Basin

Abstract: The historic landscape is an important component of a village, and the alteration of villages is a necessary process of development. To analyze characteristics of historic rural landscape alterations and the reasons behind them, this study utilized a landscape multifunctional approach and a comprehensive methodology comprising space syntax and field investigations. This study divides the historic rural landscape into two types, ecology-led and production-led patterns, which validate the relationship among ecol… Show more

“…According to the Spearman correlation coefficient method, the rural multifunction tradeoff–synergy relationship was judged. The positive correlation showed the mutual gain and orderly development of the coordination relationship, while the negative correlation showed the tradeoff relationship of one tradeoff and another tradeoff, disorder and chaos [ 50 ]. The absolute value indicated the degree of correlation, that is, the strength of the tradeoff–synergy relationship ( Table 3 ).…”

“…Rural areas have multifunctional properties, which not only provide food security for rural residents, but also provide housing security for rural people. Moreover, they are also an important carrier to maintain regional ecological security, with multiple functions such as production, life, and ecology [ 50 ]. Therefore, the connotation of rural multifunction refers to the sum of various functions provided by rural areas to meet the various needs of rural residents in a certain social development stage.…”

“…However, they did not elaborate on how public spatial functions maintain the stability of the spatial structure. Chen and Wei [67] confirmed the spatial relevance of ecological, productive, and living functions in traditional settlements using space syntax. However, these studies did not fully explain the interactions between spatial functions and structures.…”

“…In order to understand the planning of rural landscape vegetation, it was proposed to use the form of LiDARe point data to collect information on linear vegetation elements in the landscape and sequentially use neighborhood feature recognition and random forest classifier to propose an optimization scheme for the linear vegetation planning of rural landscape gardens [12]. Chen, Y. et al combined the three methods of multifunctional analysis of landscapes, spatial syntax, and field surveys into an integrated research method, analyzed the process of rural historical landscape change as well as the reasons, divided the rural landscape into two different types, and demonstrated the connection between rural ecology, society, and culture from the spatial perspective, which provided a new direction for rural landscape gardening and landscape planning [13]. Burnet, J. E. et al investigated a rural landscape park in the northeastern part of Slovenia as a survey object and investigated the rural landscape situation in Central Europe.…”
