Alternative approach for precise and accurate Student´s t critical values and application in geosciences

Abstract: We applied an alternative Monte Carlo simulation approach to obtain precise and accurate critical values (with 3 to 8 decimal places) for the Student´s t test for normal samples of degrees of freedom up to 6000 and for two-sided confidence levels of 50% to 99.9% and correspondingly for one-sided confidence levels of 75% to 99.95%. As an innovation, unlike the existing literature precision estimates of critical values are also individually reported. Prior to our work, critical values (with 2 or 3 decimal places… Show more

“…Our approach to the statistical problem of test performance is novel because, instead of using commercial or freely available software, we programmed and generated extremely precise and accurate random numbers and normally distributed data, used very large replications of 20,000,000, performed 102 independent experiments, and reduced the simulation errors to such an extent that the differences in test performance are far greater than the total uncertainties expressed as 99% confidence intervals of the mean. This is an approach hitherto practiced by none (see, e.g., [ 8 – 18 ]) except by our group [ 19 – 23 ]. This work, therefore, supersedes the approximate simulation results of test performance reported by the statisticians Hayes and Kinsella [ 7 ].…”

“…The statistical inference in these programs is made through the new, highly precise, and accurate critical values obtained from Monte Carlo simulations Quiroz-Ruiz, 2008, 2011;Cruz-Huicochea and Verma, 2013;Verma and Cruz-Huicochea, 2013).…”

“…Using UDASYS software (Verma et al, 2013a), we applied the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test at the 99% confidence level for the compositional data to statistically identify the similarities between the SN and SC sands. This software uses precise and accurate critical values of F (Cruz-Huicochea and Verma, 2013) and t (Verma and Cruz-Huicochea, 2013) for the application of significance tests (F, t, and ANOVA;Verma, 2005). The samples were differentiated as 4 independent groups for ANOVA, i.e.…”
