Alternative Bituminous Binder for Sustainable Flexible Pavement: A Review

Abstract: Bituminous binders used for flexible pavement materials are primarily obtained from refinement of petroleum. Since petroleum is non-renewable resource, there is an urgent need to produce alternative binders from bio-renewable resources. Standard alternative binders include pyrolyzed materials, jatropha curcas oil, waste cooking oil, pine resin, etc. This article presents an overview on the application of various types of alternative binders as a modifier for virgin asphalt, rejuvenator for aging asphalt, and r… Show more

“…In addition, the main hurdles that limit the application of seed bio-oils are the relatively low bio-oil yields from plant seed and a production/collection process that is time-consuming and labor intensive. 209 Some researchers recommended using chemical solvents such as n-hexane to increase oil yields. However, using chemical solvents can significantly increase the cost of bio-oil production.…”

“…However, the moisture sensitivity of asphalt must be carefully evaluated before using the produced bio-oils, since the performance of asphalt can significantly be influenced by moisture. In addition, the main hurdles that limit the application of seed bio-oils are the relatively low bio-oil yields from plant seed and a production/collection process that is time-consuming and labor intensive . Some researchers recommended using chemical solvents such as n -hexane to increase oil yields.…”
