Alternative Hydrogen Peroxide Sources for Peroxyoxalate “Glowstick” Chemiluminescence Demonstrations

Abstract: 10Simple protocols have been devised for peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence demonstrations that use urea-hydrogen peroxide or sodium percarbonate as oxidants in place of aqueous solutions of hydrogen peroxide. The procedures described are compatible with well-known peroxyoxalates and fluorescers and have been found to be convenient for use for outreach activities in venues with limited laboratory facilities. 15ABSTRACT GRAPHIC

“…However, as compared to the previously mentioned compounds, fluorescence is not emitted by the high-energy intermediate itself. Light emission is produced by energy transfer to a fluorescer, which gets excited in a S1 state (Smellie et al, 2017). The oxalate compound and the fluorescent sensitizer can be chosen independently.…”

“…The oxalate bonds of the POE could react with H 2 O 2 and provide energy for fluorescent molecules to light up. [32][33][34] Compared with small molecule oxalate compounds, the POE was less likely to escape after being encapsulated into nanoparticles, which could result in a better detection effect. The composition of POE could also be adjusted to improve its sensitivity to H 2 O 2 and its stability in water.…”

“…However, enzymes are expensive and unstable, and enzyme inactivation can induce light decay in the above enzyme-involved long-lasting CL systems . Peroxyoxalate ester CL system does not need enzymes and can also produce long-lasting emission, which is used broadly in consumer products (such as light sticks and fishing lures) . However, peroxyoxalate ester CL reagents suffer from their strong hydrophobicity and cannot be readily applied to aqueous biological systems …”
