Aluminum oxide nanoparticles as saturable absorber for C-band passively Q-switched fiber laser

Abstract: We report on aluminum oxide nanoparticles (AlO NPs) as a saturable absorber (SA) for passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) operating at a wavelength of 1560.6 nm within the C-band region. A thin film of AlO-SA was prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a host polymer. Very stable pulses with a 57.8 KHz repetition rate and 5.6 μs pulse width at a threshold pump power of 158 mW were obtained. A 2.8 μs pulse width, 81 kHz pulse repetition rate, with maximum pulse energy of 56.7 nJ at a diode pum… Show more

“…Generally, the graphene has great ability to produce high nonlinear absorption and the highest modulation depth. However, it still has certain limitations related to its weak absorption coefficient and its low damage threshold [62,63]. The CNTs also have low damage threshold, and their operating wavelength depends on their diameters [62].…”

“…Hence, SA is a key component for achieving ultra-short pulse operation from fiber lasers. A variety of SAs, such as carbon nanotube 4 , 5 , graphene 6 , Oxide films based SAs 7 , 8 , semiconductor saturable-absorber mirrors (SESAMs) 9 , 10 , and topological insulators 11 , 12 have been implemented in fiber lasers and cavities for the passive mode-locked pulse generation. Among oxide films, ZnO material is considered a viable material due to its electrical and optical characteristics.…”

“…CdS quantum dots as SA have been used in an Er-doped fiber laser to generate Q-switched pulses [10]. Besides ZnO, the use of oxide semiconductors such as TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , NiO, and Fe 3 O 4 NPs as optical modulators has also been demonstrated in previous reports [11][12][13][14][15].…”
