Ameliorating Effect of Various Fractions ofRumex hastatusRoots against Hepato- and Testicular Toxicity Caused by CCl4

Abstract: Effect of methanolic extract of Rumex hastatus roots (MRR) and its derived fractions, n-hexane (HRR), ethyl acetate (ERR), chloroform (CRR), butanol (BRR), and aqueous extract (ARR), was studied against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepato and testicular toxicity in rats. Intraperitoneal dose of 20 percent CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg bw) was administered twice a week for eight weeks to a group of rats. Other groups were given CCl4 and various fractions of R. hastatus roots (200 mg/kg bw). CCl4 treatment depleted glu… Show more

“…It is well established that liver plays an essential role in synthesis of all compounds sharing in the maintenance of anadaquate endocrine homostasis such as hormones, their transport proteins and conversion enzymes (Youssef & Mullen, 2002). Serum testosterone (the male sex hormones), FSH and LH were considerably decreased; While, estradiol and prolactin concentrations were remarkably raised in CCl4 intoxicated rats (Sahreen et al, 2013). In this manner, results of present study are concord with the findings of Youssef & Mullen (2002) and Sahreen et al (2013).…”

In this manner, results of present study are concord with the findings of Youssef & Mullen (2002) and Sahreen et al (2013). The reduction in serum testosterone indicates either a direct effect of CCl4 on the number of leyding cells or as indirect impact by disturbing the hormonal environment at hypothalamopitutary axis (Latif et al, 2008).…”

“…Further, the compromised activity of antioxidant enzymes deteriorates the situation by generation of secondary free radicals. The results presented in this study are instigated with other studies [59, 60] where the CCl 4 intoxication has increased the level of H 2 O 2 and suppressed the activity of antioxidant enzymes in hepatic tissues. The rats exposed to CCl 4 and with FXM simultaneously exhibited significant increase in the activity level of antioxidant enzymes along with significant decrease in H 2 O 2 of sample homogenates as compared to the CCl 4 group.…”

“…Lipid peroxidation induced by free radicals may also be the origin of disruption of antioxidant enzyme activity [62]. It has been proved that the intoxication with CCl 4 is the origin of enhanced lipid peroxidation witnessed by an elevated level of MDA in kidneys [26]. Increased lipid peroxidation in renal tissues following CCl 4 poisoning has been well documented [23,28,55].…”
