Ameliorative effects of Artemisia argyi Folium extract on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis-like lesions in BALB/c mice

Abstract: Artemisia argyi Folium has been used to treat skin diseases, including eczema and dermatitis, in South Korean medicine. The present study investigated the curative effects of Artemisia argyi Folium extract (AAFE) on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD)-like skin lesions in a BALB/c mouse model. Briefly, the dorsal skin of the BALB/c mice was sensitized three times with DNCB, whereas the ears were challenged twice. Repeated treatment with DNCB induced AD-like lesions. The effects of AA… Show more

“…Bits of cytokines may serve as cell‐signalling molecules, which trigger a disease‐fighting response from nuclear factor of kappa B (NF‐κB) signal pathway, hence promoting the formation of immunoglobulins (Epinat & Gilmore, ) and cytokines, such as IL‐1, IL‐2, IL‐6, TNF‐α, as well as growth factor (Huang & Miyamoto, ). As reported, the Artemisia argyi extract ameliorated inflammation by regulating IκBα/NF‐κB pathways (Han et al, ; Ryu et al, ; Zhang et al, ). However, the effects of WEAO on the NF‐κB signalling pathway were not investigated in this study, and further research is still needed.…”

“…() indicated that consumption of Artemisia ordosica aqueous extract was sufficient to relieve the immune stress imposed by lipopolysaccharide in broiler chickens. Artemisia argyi folium extracts have been shown the regulating effects on the immune system in mice model as well (Han et al, ). Furthermore, in this study, we found there was significant increase in serum IgG, IgA and IgM in piglets with consumption of WEAO diets, which is similar to the previous reports showing that the serum levels of IgG (Sani et al, ) and IgA (Song et al, ) were markedly increased in animals feeding diets supplemented with Artemisia annua .…”

“…In addition, polydatin (3, 4′, 5-trihydroxystilbene-3-β-mono-D-glucoside), a natural component extracted from Polygonum cuspidatum , directly inhibited activity of SYK and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in mast cells [ 75 ]. Extracts of Cymbidium eburneo-kanran and Artemisia argyi down-regulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through suppression of the signaling pathway, including phosphorylation of SYK [ 50 , 76 , 77 ]. The extracts further alleviated DNCB-induced AD-like phenotypes, including skin lesion severity, scratching behavior, and IgE levels [ 50 , 76 , 77 ].…”
