“…Researchers have found that CA negatively impacts communication in all of these contexts (Richmond & McCroskey, 1995). Not surprisingly, individuals with high CA are less likely to engage in a variety of social situations, often not doing so because they feel they lack the communication competence necessary to communicate successfully (Watson, Monroe, & Atterstrom, 1984). Also, the more often an individual encounters a particular communication experience, such as public speaking or group discussions, the less CA they experience (Pedersen, Tkachuk, & Allen, 2008).…”

“…A further scrutiny of the results indicated that the two groups' participants did not represent a variation in the degree of their CA. This result was in contrast to Watson and his colleagues' research findings who found that Swedish children were more apprehensive than American students (Watson et al, 1984(Watson et al, , 1989. The reason for this contrast was assumed to be the age differences of the participants in the studies.…”

“…Research has shown that individuals with high levels of CA are perceived as less popular or attractive than individuals with lower levels of CA (McCroskey, 1977). Also, individuals with high levels of CA are less likely to engage in social situations, because it makes them inadequate (Watson, Monroe, & Atterstrom, 1984). Bourhis and Allen (1992) found a negative relationship between CA and measures of cognitive performance.…”
