Aminopyralid soil residues affect rotational vegetable crops in Florida

Abstract: The crops included in this research were negatively affected by aminopyralid at soil concentrations less than the limit of quantitation (0.2 µg kg(-1) ). Therefore, it was concluded that a field bioassay must be used to determine whether carryover injury will occur when these crops are planted on a site where aminopyralid has been previously applied.

“…Since increasing the aminopyralid rate may also provide residual control of other weed species (Ferrell, Mullahey, Langeland, & Kline, 2006; Renz, 2010), it may be appropriate to apply higher rates of aminopyralid. However, aminopyralid use may need to be avoided where pastures are rotated into vegetable or other sensitive crops, as it has been shown to cause injury (Fast et al., 2011). Therefore, applications of dicamba + 2,4‐D would provide producers with an option for Nuttall's thistle control in the year prior to planting sensitive crops such as tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.).…”

“…Aminopyralid (AM) purity 96% (Shanghai Tianfu Chemical Ltd, Hong Kong, China) and herbicide Mustang Forte (MF) (Dow Chemical Company, Midland, USA), active substances 2,4-D (180 g/L), AM (10 g/L), and florasulam (5 g/L), was applied at corresponding doses: C1 = 3.75, C2 = 7.5 and C3 = 15 g/ ha of AM. We relied primarily on similar studies (Fast et al, 2011;Soukupova and Koudela, 2023).…”

“…However, if the origin of the straw used is unknown, it may contain residues of various herbicides used in grain cultivation, which can hinder the growth of strawberry plants. These residues are released from straw used as mulch by rain and can harm sensitive plants, even in very small amounts (Fast et al, 2011;Soukupova and Koudela, 2023).…”

“…Aminopyralid is an herbicide labeled for POST control of western ragweed in pasture and rangeland (Anonymous 2013) and is known to have soil activity on some plants for at least 215 d after treatment (DAT;Fast et al 2011;Ferrell et al 2006;Mikkelson and Lym 2011;Rhodes and Phillips 2011). It has been successfully used as a PRE treatment for medusahead [Taeniatherum caput-medusae (L.) Nevski], a problematic, invasive grass (Kyser et al 2012).…”
