Accumulating evidence suggests that electroacupuncture (EA) has obevious therapeutic effects and unique advantages in alleviating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), while the underlying neuromolecular mechanisms of EA intervention for MIRI have not been fully elucidated. The aim of the study is to investigate the role of the neural pathway of hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) neurons projecting to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) in the alleviation of MIRI rats by EA preconditioning. MIRI models were established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 2 h. Electrocardiogram recording, chemogenetics, enzyne-linked immunosorbent assay, multichannel physiology recording, hematoxylin-eosin and immunofluorescence staining methods were conducted to demonstrate that firing frequencies of neurons in the PVN and expression of c-Fos decreased by EA pretreatment. Meanwhile, EA preconditioning significantly reduced the levels of creatine kinase isoenzymes (CK-MB), cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Virus tracing showed a projection connection between PVN and RVLM. Inhibition of the PVN-RVLM neural pathway could replicate the protective effect of EA pretreatment on MIRI rats. However, activation of the pathway weakened the effect of EA preconditioning. EA pretreatment alleviated MIRI by regulating PVN neurons projecting to RVLM. This work provides novel evidence of EA pretreatment for improving MIRI.

Among the respiratory disorders in dogs from small breeds, tracheal collapse is one of the most commonly found in clinical practice. Presently, acupuncture is widely used as an alternative treatment which was shown to bring about positive effects in the treatment of human respiratory diseases. The present study demonstrated the effect of acupuncture on tracheal collapse dogs. We hypothesized that acupuncture can help dogs suffering from tracheal collapse by improving various parameters including heart rate variability, serum biomarkers for oxidative stress, exercise performance, and quality of life. Twenty client-owned dogs from small breeds with tracheal collapse disease were enrolled. The study was divided into two 5-week periods. During the first period, the dogs received normal veterinary care but received no acupuncture treatment (NAC). After completing that period, all forms of treatment were withheld for one week before the beginning of the second period. In the second period, all dogs restarted normal veterinary care and underwent acupuncture treatment (AC) once a week for five consecutive weeks. Blood was collected at the beginning and end of each of the two periods for malondialdehyde (MDA) level measurement. Heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded at the 1st, 3rd and 5th weeks of both periods. Exercise tests were performed at the beginning and end of AC period and questionnaire interviews with the owners were accomplished at the end of each period. The results showed that acupuncture can alleviate clinical signs of tracheal collapse, reduce MDA level, and improve sympathovagal balance. We suggest that acupuncture treatment could be used as an adjunct treatment for canine tracheal collapse.

Clinical Effect of Amiodarone in the Treatment of Senile Congestive Heart Failure with Ventricular Arrhythmia

To analyze the clinical effect of amiodarone in the treatment of congestive heart failure with ventricular arrhythmias in the elderly is the objective of the study. A total of 62 elderly patients with congestive heart failure complicated with ventricular arrhythmia who received treatment in our hospital from January 2020 to June 2021 were enrolled and randomly divided into conventional group and amiodarone group. The conventional group was given diuretic and cardiotonic treatment, while the amiodarone group was given amiodarone treatment on the basis of the conventional group. The efficacy of congestive heart failure with ventricular arrhythmias, adverse drug reactions, cardiac index, heart rate, left ventricular end-diastolic, left ventricular ejection fraction, tachycardia, ventricular precontraction and QT (min) before and after the intervention, time to electrocardiogram normalization, and time to discharge were compared between the two groups. The efficacy of congestive heart failure with ventricular arrhythmia was higher in the amiodarone group than in the conventional group (p<0.05); no serious adverse drug reactions occurred in both groups, and the difference was not statistically significant; cardiac index, heart rate, left ventricular end-diastolic and left ventricular ejection fraction were similar in the two groups before the intervention, and the difference was not statistically significant; cardiac index, heart rate, left ventricular end-diastolic, and left ventricular ejection fraction were better in the amiodarone group than in the conventional group at discharge (p<0.05). Tachycardia episodes, ventricular precontraction and QT (min) were similar between the two groups before the intervention and the differences were not statistically significant; tachycardia episodes, ventricular precontraction and QT (min) were better in the amiodarone group than in the conventional group at the time of discharge (p<0.05). The amiodarone group had a shorter time to electrocardiogram reversion and discharge than the conventional group (p<0.05). Amiodarone is clinically effective and safe in the treatment of congestive heart failure with ventricular arrhythmias in the elderly, and it can effectively improve cardiac function, restore electrocardiogram and vital signs, and shorten hospitalization time, so it is worth promoting its application.
