What happens after the death of a marine tetrapod in seawater? Palaeontologists and neontologists have claimed that large lung-breathing marine tetrapods such as ichthyosaurs had a lower density than seawater, implying that their carcasses floated at the surface after death and sank subsequently after leakage of putrefaction gases (or ''carcass explosions''). Such explosions would thus account for the skeletal disarticulation observed frequently in the fossil record. We examined the taphonomy and sedimentary environment of numerous ichthyosaur skeletons and compared them to living marine tetrapods, principally cetaceans, and measured abdominal pressures in human carcasses. Our data and a review of the literature demonstrate that carcasses sink and do not explode (and spread skeletal elements). We argue that the normally slightly negatively buoyant carcasses of ichthyosaurs would have sunk to the sea floor and risen to the surface only when they remained in shallow water above a certain temperature and at a low scavenging rate. Once surfaced, prolonged floating may have occurred and a carcass have decomposed gradually. Our conclusions are of significance to the understanding of the inclusion of carcasses of lung-breathing vertebrates in marine nutrient recycling. The postmortem fate has essential implications for the interpretation of vertebrate fossil preservation (the existence of complete, disarticulated fossil skeletons is not explained by previous hypotheses), palaeobathymetry, the physiology of modern marine lung-breathing tetrapods and their conservation, and the recovery of human bodies from seawater.

This paper describes a tectonostratigraphic model of the synrift evolution of the Early Jurassic High Atlas rift of Morocco. The model is constrained by mapping of a set of inverted extensional blocks, by facies analysis of carbonate platform and turbiditic to hemipelagic synrift deposits, and by high-resolution (n 3 100 ka) biostratigraphy of the Early Jurassic succession. The chronostratigraphic packages of the High Atlas of Rich vary significantly in thickness, facies and architecture from one tectonic block to another. Our study shows how synrift strain varied in space and time over a long time interval (14 Ma) around the High Atlas rift. Initially, in Sinemurian time, the High Atlas rift was affected by low-strain normal faulting that controlled the growth of an extensive, low-gradient carbonate platform, except in the northern domain (towards the rift axis), where hemipelagic deposition related to high-rate faulting prevailed. Subsequently, in Carixian-Domerian time, a rapid increase in accommodation space and block subsidence caused by highstrain normal faulting brought about localized drowning of the carbonate platform and the development of calciturbidites and of starved deposits towards the rift axis. During this interval, high-strain, upper-crustal normal faulting migrated rapidly (over a period of 5 Ma) towards the rift periphery.

The Bathonian Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) is proposed at the base of limestone bed RB071 (bed 23 in Sturani 1967) in the Ravin du Bes Section (43057' 38" N, 6° IS' 55" E), Bas-Auran area, "Alpes de Haute Provence" French department. The Ravin du BesSectioll , as formal candidate GSSP for the base of the Bathonian Stage, satisfies most of the requirements recommended by the International Commission on Stratigraphy: 1) The ex posure extends over 13 m in thickness. At the Bajocian-Bathonian transition, no vertical (bio-, ichno-or tap ho-) facies changes, condensation, stratigraphic gaps or hiatuses have been recorded. Structural complexity, synsedimentary and tectonic disturbances, or important alterations by metamorphism are not relevant constraints. 2) There is a well-preserved, abundant and diverse fos sil record across the boundary interval, with key markers (ammonites and IntroductionThe present paper corresponds to part of the scientifIc dossier recently prepared by several specialists and sent to all mem bers of the Bathonian Working Group (International Subcom mission on Jurassic Stratigraphy, November 2007), in order to achieve the formal ballot on the selection and proposal of the Global Stratotype Section and Point (hereafter GSSP The Bathonian Working Group (BtWG) was established in 1984, during the 1st International Symposium on Jurassic Stratigraphy in Erlangen, in order to improve the geologic data relative to the Bajocian/Bathonian boundary. The Bas-Auran section was first proposed as stratotype in a presentation to the Luxembourg II (1967) Colloquium by Torren� but not pub lished until 1974lished until (Morton 1974Torrens 1974a Torrens , b, 1987 Torrens , 2002 fig. 8; pI. 19, fIgS. 1-2) are the index species, respectively, of the Bathonian basal zone and subzone. The Zigzag Zone was distinguished from the underlying Parkinsoni Zone by Oppel (1857Oppel ( . p. 579. 1862. and later assigned to the "Bath-Gruppe·· (Oppel 1865. p. 309) in a discussion of the section at "Mon tagne de Crussol" in the Ardeche (France). The Convergens Subzone was mentioned by Maubeuge (1950, p. 4), based on the "Convergens horizon" that was used in letters by Arkell (1951-59. p.10; 1956. p. 62). The Bajocian/Bathonian bound ary established between the Parkinsoni and Zigzag zones was recommended at the two congresses denominated "Colloque du Jurassique" held in Luxembourg in 1962(Rioult 1964 Tor rens 1965) and 1967(Torrens 1974a. The localities of Bath (England) and the "Montagne de Crussol" (France), however, have been considered quite unsuitable for a typological defini tion of the Bathonian Stage, because they are condensed sec tions with discontinuous and lenticular beds (Torrens 1974a(Torrens , b, 2002Page 1996b).
