Amount and Composition of Diacyl Glyceryl Ethers in Various Tissue Lipids of the Deep-sea Squid Berryteuthis magister.

Abstract: Examination was made of the amounts and compositions of diacyl glyceryl ethers (DAGE) in various tissue lipids of the deep-sea squid Berryteuthis magister. Liver specimens contained copious amounts of lipids (56.9%) which were composed almost entirely of triacylglycerols (TG: 53.1%) and DAGE (32.4%). Ovary samples contained substantial amounts of lipids (13.9%) with considerable DAGE (8.1%). Mantle, integument and testis samples contained small amounts of lipids (1.0, 1.1 and 1.5%, respectively) with lower DAG… Show more

“…However, slight difference between D. gigas and the two Berryteuthis squids were also found. Although high and noticeable levels of ARA in the Humboldt squid lipids were observed, the Hayashi group found only trace levels of ARA in the lipids of B. magister . In the present report, detailed fatty acid composition of respective phospholipids, such as PE and PC, were obtained, compared with those in the total phospholipid of the two Berryteuthis species.…”

“…Consequently, EPA and DHA are generally found as major concentrated components in tissue lipids of marine animals at the higher trophic levels, such as highly migratory fishes . For example, high levels of DHA in the phospholipids of D. gigas (21.7–22.6% for PE and 43.5–47.8% for PC) were observed similar to those in the two Berryteuthis squids (31.9% for PL of B. magister and 42.7% for PL of B. anonychus ). However, slight difference between D. gigas and the two Berryteuthis squids were also found.…”

“…The biological role of a high content of DAGE in marine organisms is not well known. Hayashi and Kishimura (2002) assumed that DAGE is present in the liver of B. magister as metabolic energy reserves fueling development in the absence of externally available food. Table 2 presents the composition of AKG, obtained after DAGE deacylation.…”

“…Marine lipids are the best known and abundant in natural sources of AG and n-3 PUFA. Liver of cartilaginous fish and some mollusks contain a high amounts of ether lipids, 1-Oalkyl-2,3-diacyl-sn-glycerols (DAGE), the content of which in the total lipids reaches 50.0 % (Bakes and Nichols 1995;Hayashi and Kishimura 2002). Diversity of molecular species of neutral ether lipids is determined by the length and double bond number of the alkyl fragments in sn-1 position, and also by differences in the fatty acid composition.…”
