Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid resistance in veterinary medicine - the situation in Europe: a review

Abstract: In the recent past years, important efforts towards the prudent use of antimicrobials have been made in order to optimize antibacterial use, and maximize therapeutic effect while minimizing the development of resistance. Knowledge on the occurrence of resistance in bacteria could help in improving the clinical success of therapeutic decisions. Since the discovery of amoxicillin, this drug has been extensively used throughout the world in veterinary medicine, alone and also in combination with clavulanic acid. … Show more

“…One isolate was classified as a multidrug resistant strain (SCHWARZ et al, 2010), based on its resistance to amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and florfenicol. Identification of a multidrug resistant strain is concerning as trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole and florfenicol are commonly used to treat diarrhea in foals and calves (KUANG et al, 2015) and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is widely used in both veterinary and human medicine (BELMAR-LIBERATO, 2011;OTEO et al, 2008).…”

“…Methanol is used as control for the assay. [6] 50 µL of freshly prepared cell suspension (required organism) was inoculated into freshly prepared and sterilized nutrient agar medium by maintaining optimum temperature and transferred to sterile petri dishes and allowed them to solidify. The dishes or plates were placed on a smooth surface to ensure that the layers of medium are uniform in thickness.…”
