Ampelography - An old technique with future uses: the case of minor varieties of <em>Vitis vinifera</em> L. from the Balearic Islands

Abstract: <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Aims</strong>: We report the genetic, phenological, agronomic and ampelographic characterization of 27 minor grapevine accessions (<em>Vitis vinifera </em>L.) from the Balearic Islands (Spain). The influence of occasional climatic phenomena (hailstorm) and the ampelographer’s experience on these characteristics was studied.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Methods and results</strong>: In 2006 and 2007, grap… Show more

“…The Numerical Taxonomy System [NTSYS v2.1; Rholf ()] was used for similarity analysis and correspondence analysis. Hierarchical cluster analysis was carried out using the correlation coefficient (Cervera et al ) and the unweighted pair group method analysis as a linkage method (García Muñoz et al ).…”

“…Most historical descriptions of grape cultivars were based on morphological methods (Herrera , Clemente , Galet ). Nowadays, ampelography is a preliminary method for clarifying the identity of plant material (García Muñoz et al ). It is also the method used by different countries to include a cultivar in official lists.…”

“…The conventional methods of identification rely on ampelography based on the morphological differences between the varieties [11][12][13], i.e. leaf shape and contours, growing shoots characteristics, flower sex, grape cluster shape and grape colour.…”
