Amperometric Sensing of Ethylene Oxide in the Gas Phase

Abstract: The sensing device used is based on a porous Pt electrode, which is supported on an ion-exchange membrane and directly exposed to the gas phase. Under acid conditions, ethylene oxide was found to be oxidized on the platinum oxide surface at +550 mV vs MSE, thus enabling its monitoring via the measurement of the associated current. A detection limit of 15 ppb was obtained, based on a signal-to-noise ratio of three, and a linear dynamic range was found up to 100 ppm. The effects of mass transport, humidity, and … Show more

“…Metal-SPE based gas sensors have been developed in our group for methane [35], ethylene [36], ethylene oxide [37], acetylene [38], formaldehyde [39], acetaldehyde/ethanol [31], SO 2 [40], NO and NO 2 [41]. This electrode architecture is based on a porous sensing electrode which is directly exposed to the gas phase and separated from the electrolyte solution by a non-porous ion-conducting membrane such as Nafion.…”

“…A basic amperometric electrochemical sensor is comprised of at least two electrodes held at a fixed voltage. The working electrodes typically are made of platinum or gold [15][16][17] . As shown in Figure 1.1, when the analyte airstream is passed over the sensor, a portion of the molecules diffuse through a membrane and are oxidized at the air-metal interface on a working electrode.…”

“…The OSHA recommended exposure limit (REL) for ethylene oxide is 0.1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) with 10-minute ceiling limit of 5 ppm whereas the OSHA permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 1 ppm as an 8-hour TWA with a 15-minute excursion limit of 5 ppm [9]. Many methods have been developed to monitor ethylene oxide in air such as charcoal tube [10], HBr coated charcoal tube [11], Tedlar gas bag [12], impinger [3], badge [13], 3M charcoal disc [14] passive dosimeter [15] and direct reading with IR, photoionization detector and chromatographic gas [3], gas sensor [16] and also bio-monitoring [6,17].…”
