Ampicillin-Resistant Mutants ofEscherichia coliK-12 with Lipopolysaccharide Alterations Affecting Mating Ability and Susceptibility to Sex-Specific Bacteriophages

Abstract: Mutations from moderate (class I) to high (class III) ampicillin resistance in a male and a female strain of Escherichia coli K-12 have been found to be accompanied by surface alterations, first demonstrated as hindrance in the formation of mating pairs. These changes have now been studied with the ribonucleic acid phage MS2, and especially with the "female-specific" phage OW. Several class III mutations in male and female strains were found to make the cells susceptible to phage 4W and to reduce their abiliti… Show more

“…Measurement of antimicrobial activity of the mucus was based upon a turbidimetric assay from Noga et al (1994), where inhibition of Escherichia coli D31 (E. coli D31: Monner et al, 1971) treated with plasma was measured after 36 h of incubation. Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were obtained from the culture collection at Yale University.…”

“…D21 parental strains and derivative mutants were obtained from the E. coli Genetic Stock Center (cgsc.biology.yale.edu/top.html). These strains have been characterised and their LPS composition deduced after gas chromatography analysis of carbohydrates [15][16][17][18]. Lipid A mutant strains MLK43, 986 and 1067 were kindly donated by Professor C.R.…”
