Amplifier-Antenna Array Optimization for EIRP by Phase Tuning

Abstract: In this paper, we analyse an antenna array fed with element-specific phase shifters and amplifiers. The elements of the array are mutually coupled and the operation of the amplifiers depend on the load impedance presented by the array. We derive a method for maximizing EIRP in a given direction and demonstrate the concept by simulations with 2x2 array fed with element-specific phase shifters and amplifiers at 2.5 GHz. Compared to the reference case, the optimization provides up to 0.7 dB improvement in EIRP in… Show more

“…This approach takes an active impedance and non-linearity of amplifiers into account. The method uses several input data sources: antenna S-parameters of the antenna array, load-pull amplifier models, connection configuration (which of the 8 antennas is connected to turned on amplifier) and phases [13]. The method starts with loading all amplifiers with an antenna impedance, then one by one the method iteratively calculates how much single channel output power changes the loading impedance of all other channels.…”

“…To tackle the coupling in future antenna systems, we have introduced a method to determine maximum EIRP in our previous paper [28] using phase tuning for a system with amplifiers connected directly at the inputs of antenna array elements. Compared to methods that lower coupling, decoupling networks, neutralization lines or band-gaps, our method does not require any components in-between amplifier and antenna.…”
