An Alternative to “Words” in the Behavior Modification of Disadvantaged Youth

Abstract: This discussion is concerned with identifying and briefly describing seven major modalities of behavior modification. These can best be categorized into two systems; one system based on identification, reward and punishment, internalization of behavior controls and acceptance of responsibility for choices made. In short, it is highly probable that a structured work approach, including work sample assessment, work adjustment training, the learning of graded tasks, job tryout and selective placement is more effective with essentially nonverbal, unmotivated "disadvantaged" clients than is a verbal counseling approach (Ehrle, R.
