Sustainable materials and their potential application in building industries are gaining attention; however, there is still largely unexplored floating biomass, notably “Phumdi”, as a sustainable floating building material. Phumdi, a distinctive floating biomass, is observed in specific wetland habitats in the Loktak Lake located in Manipur, India. This heterogeneous mass of vegetation, organic matter, and soil has been utilised by several communities for various purposes, such as medicine, food, forage, and material for building houses, handicrafts, and aquaculture activities. Such floating bodies serve as a sanctuary for a wide range of flora and fauna. The study aims to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of phumdi as a sustainable floating material in comparison with other widely recognized construction materials such as recycled plastics, bamboo, corrugated metal sheets, and wood by evaluating the “green feature” chart. The research and experiments carried out on phumdi have underscored the highest sustainability level for its use, i.e., 15 green features, followed by wood and bamboo with 14 features, and the other two materials with low sustainability performance: plastic barrels with seven features and corrugated zinc metal sheets with eight features. Further investigation is necessary for the advancement of this material as a viable alternative for biomass-based building materials.

Cement, as a concrete-forming material, is a contributor to CO2 emissions in the world. Reducing cement and substituting fly ash and silica fume as concrete substitution materials in the manufacture of concrete makes green concrete without lowering the quality of the concrete. Concrete in the marine environment is frequently destroyed by severe environmental elements, such as seawater penetration; hence, high-performance concrete materials are required. This research aims to analyze the effect of adding fly ash and silica fume on concrete compressive strength and permeability. The specimens made were then immersed in freshwater and seawater. Analysis of the compressive strength test result shows that the compressive strength values for the samples treated with freshwater or seawater have exceeded the expected compressive strength of 30 MPa. The permeability test on the test object resulted in the supplementary fly ash to the concrete immersed in freshwater having a good value, i.e., the water penetration was below that required by DIN-1045, namely 5 cm. The penetration of concrete with fly ash impressed in seawater is good only in concrete with a 10% fly ash variation. The water penetration value still meets the requirements in concrete with silica fume for all variations with freshwater and seawater treatment.

Coastal area which affected by floods and tides has problems about safety and comfortable environment. The world of floating construction has introduced substructure foundations made from expanded polystyrene system (EPS) with a lightweight concrete cover. The styrofoam platform must meet the buoyancy, stability and center height test requirements. The research aims to analyze the magnitude of the buoyant force (Fa) against downward force due to the load weight on platform. The platform is strong and stable when upward force (Fa) is greater than total structure weight (G). The object will float if buoyant force (Fa) is greater than the gravitational force (g). The balance is stable if center of object gravity (Bo) is below the center of buoyancy (Ao), otherwise it will be in arbitrary balance. The height of centrum can be determined m > 0, means the object is stable. The research results show that 6.12x5.12x0.68m Styrofoam platform with a buoyancy force of 18,246.6 kg is able to withstand an additional load of 3647.62 kg with an SF value of 2.59. It means there is a linear relationship between magnitude of loading value and sinking height of Styrofoam platform. The safety factor value decreases as the sinking height of platform increases. The stability value of Fa/G is 3.01>1.2. The metacentrum’s height is 16.531 > 0, so the platform with a lightweight concrete cover is declared stable and safe to use.
