An Analysis of Plastic Barrels as a Platforms Material of Floating House in Coastal Areas

Abstract: Housing is a very basic necessity for human life, so it is needed by considering its comfort of the environment and constituent materials. For people who live on the coastal areas which have narrow land and low environmental arrangement, a floating house can be the solution. The floating house is a building that stands or floats on water by relying on the weight and area of the field that is submerged as load parameters that are able to be borne by the structure. The house can float and be placed on the edge o… Show more

“…The footing of the floating house design is a substructure that supports the building's entire weight and allows the house to levitate. There is a range of materials that can be utilised as the foundation of a floating house, among which plastic barrels are included [30]. In Loktak Lake, there are contemporary methods for building a floating house on a plastic barrel flotation platform, see Figure 7.…”

“…(LL+): Plastic barrels are frequently developed with the intention of possessing robustness and being long-lasting. This practice effectively mitigates the necessity for frequent replacements and significantly decreases waste accumulation over an extended period; the estimated lifespan of the floating structure is 15 years [30]. However, the lifespan of HDPE plastic barrels used as floating materials in lakes can vary depending on the specific considerations related to their use in aquatic environments, water quality, maintenance and cleaning, and UV exposure.…”

“…Concrete is one of the main components of construction, both for land and sea environments. Standards that apply to concrete materials used in marine environments must have a higher compressive strength value than buildings on land (Adi et al, 2020). Research on the effect of seawater on the concrete compressive strength shows that if the concrete is soaked continuously for 28 days, it will reduce the compressive strength value.…”

“…Fortunately, improvements in construction sector have introduced floating houses which may solve the problem [3]. The problem is the need of several design models and floating house prototypes that are eco-friendly, economical, aesthetically livable and can be applied in coastal areas [4]. Floating houses require a solid foundation with high stability and to its buoyancy.…”
