An analysis of seasonality in monthly per person tourist spending in Turkish inbound tourism from a market segmentation perspective

Abstract: This study analyses seasonal variations in monthly per person tourist spending in Turkish inbound tourism from a market segmentation perspective. In this study a seasonal unit root test and recently developed decomposition techniques (TRAMO-SEATS, X-12-ARIMA) are used. It is found that there is a stochastic and strong seasonality in per person tourist spending data. The findings interestingly show that the seasonal pattern in per person tourist spending is considerably different from the seasonal pattern in to… Show more

“…With the exception of Koc & Altinay (2007) Croce & Wöber (2010) calculated the average bednights of 20 European city destinations as a proxy for the seasonal patterns, and subsequently applied Gini coefficients and Pearson's bivariate correlation coefficients to make seasonal comparissons. The methodological differences were also determinant for whether variations in seasonality were fixed for the whole period of analysis (e.g., Drakatos, 1987;Bender et al, 2005), or varied over the course of time (e.g., Koenig-Lewis & Bischoff, 2002;Koc & Altinay, 2007;.…”

“…For instance, Turkish tourism is highly seasonal with about 70% of tourists visiting Turkey between April and September for sun and sea holidays (Koc & Altinay, 2007). On top of seasonality, which requires skills to manage both the peak season and off-season, weather risk creates additional burdens in terms of the sustainability of hospitality businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc.…”
