Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyse Benidorm, San Sebastián, Gijón, Málaga, Tenerife Island and Santander smart tourist destinations (STDs) as a touristic model and example to follow by other destinations in Spain and all over the world. Design/methodology/approach To fulfil the stated objective, this study follows several phases that introduce and classify a set of measures implemented by the six Spanish smart destinations to be designed as a STD. Findings Findings suggest that being a STD requires a high cost, and this is only accessible to big destinations with enough resources. Of the 50 Spanish provinces, eight are STDs, and these are localised in coastal areas. Obviously, this challenge is not within the reach of any Spanish city. Moreover, findings of the current study prove that the six Spanish smart destinations have a good air accessibility through their six airports, but the accessibility in a STD is not just physical; this must provide digital accessibility to tourists through destination marketing organisation’s website and app that will supply them with information on a wide range of services, including accommodations, tourist attractions, restaurants, public transport, museums and monuments’ locations, amongst many others. Originality/value From a resident point of view, a STD cannot be only focused on a technological and tourism context; a STD also requires knowing and meeting the needs of local residents and having a voice in decision-making processes. Hence, this study shows a new perspective on STDs that will benefit the literature on STDs.

Assessing the risk of water leakage within urban water distribution networks (UWDN) is crucial prior to implementing any control measures. Conducting a risk assessment facilitates the development of effective water leakage management plans. By comprehensively analyzing the probability and loss factors that contribute to the risk of leakage in UWDN, this paper presents an evaluation index system for pipeline leakage risk. This index system utilized both quantitative and qualitative data on influencing factors derived from an actual pipeline network. In order to determine the precise level of pipeline leakage risk, an index theory-based pipeline leakage risk evaluation model was established. This model consisted of a single-index measure function and a multi-index comprehensive measure vector. The combined weight of evaluation indices through game theory was used to determine the weight of each index, thereby minimizing the negative effects of a single weight determination method. A risk assessment model that evaluated the leakage risk of specific pipelines was constructed based on actual data from the water distribution network in a certain area of China. The analysis showed that the risk of pipeline leakage in this area was mainly classified as a third-level risk, which is consistent with the actual evaluation results obtained from field visits.

Small islands are recognized for their vulnerability to climate change. In this context, mitigation and adaptation policies are needed, but the ecological transition must be based on data. This study aims to assess the level of sustainability reached by 26 of the inhabited Italian small islands; it collects and analyzes the data and initiatives on the energy, mobility, waste, and water sectors and discusses the islands’ steps toward sustainability. The findings show that 18 of the 26 islands are not interconnected with the national grid and that the renewable sources cover less than 5% of the energy demand on 25 of the 26 islands. The number per capita of private vehicles reaches 90 cars per 100 inhabitants on three islands. The average of the separate collection of waste on the islands is 52%, which is far from the minimum recommended threshold of 65%. Pipelines or tankers on 17 of the 26 islands guarantee the water supply, and desalination plants are still not the rule, while the presence of wastewater treatment has been detected on 12 islands, and it often provides only partial treatment. An ambitious multi-stakeholder sustainability plan for each island should be developed to overcome the typical barriers of the island and to increase the building capacity in order to use economic incentives for that goal.
