An anatomical study of the supratrochlear foramen of the Jining population

Abstract: Background/aim: The supratrochlear foramen (STF) is an important variation in the lower end of the humerus where the septum separating the coronoid and olecranon fossa is perforated. There are no studies in the literature on the STF of the Jining population. This study will make a contribution to anatomy and anthropology by adding new data.Materials and methods: STF was studied in detail in 262 adult dried humeri of unknown sex and age. The topographical anatomy of the STF was studied, morphometric measurement… Show more

“…Majority of the OAH found were oval, then round, and one triangular and irregular each. These findings and proportions strengthen earlier reports [2,15,19,20], although some unusual shapes were also reported, such as sieve-like, rectangular or reniform [6,18]. The female samples are usually shown as being more predilected for the OAH presence [1, 2, 5, 6, 13], and even slightly higher frequency in males is a rare finding [4].…”

“…The size of the aperture seems to differ in various populations. Results by Turkish researchers presented the largest transverse diameter (average 6.09 ± 2.43 mm and 6.7 ± 2.20 mm in right male humeri [7,9], as well as in Nigerian population (6.82 ± 2.92 mm in left side bones) [18], while the smallest ones are found in Chinese (mean 3.26 ± 1.15 mm in right humeri) [15] and Brazilian cases (average 2.33 ± 1.23 mm in left side samples) [1]. Smaller apertures in latter study are believed to be due to the heterogenity of Brazilian population as a consequence of mixing native people with the colonizing and immigrating nations [1].…”

“…Frekvence výskytu této variety se pohybuje v širokém rozmezí od téměř 0 % do 58 % v závislosti na populaci (Papaloucas et al 2011). Nejvyšší výskyty byly zaznamenány u afrických a indických populací, u domorodých austrálců či amerických indiánů (Li et al 2015). Moderní evropské populace, k nimž můžeme přiřadit i námi zkoumaný soubor, vykazují nižší frekvence výskytu tohoto znaku pohybující se v rozmezí 1-10 % (Erdogmus et al 2014).…”

“…2 Some authors suggest that the supratrochlear septum is not perforated in the embryonic development, and that it is intact up to 7 years of age. 3 Its development occurs more frequently during adolescence or in adulthood, due to the incomplete ossification of that region . 4 Anthropologists argue that SF is more common in individuals of ancient civilizations when compared with contemporary populations, as well as present in primates, being considered a phylogenetic characteristic.…”
